Hello there, I am training for my MCSE exam and have decided to set up a domain in my house in order to "tinker" and learn So i have a server (win 2k03) set up as a DC w/AD The problem is that i have a router (which is my gateway and DHCP & DNS server I have read that for AD to work properly all the clients and servers have to point to the DC as their DNS server How do i resolve this problem? Thank you Darin

I remember with Win2k Server this was the case. If you want to keep your router as the DHCP server to the LAN, then modify its DHCP Settings to provide the clients' DNS Server address as the IP address of your Win2003 server.
Or, kill DHCP on the router and make the Wind2003 Server the DHCP Server. Setup the proper scope w/ options and you should be good to go.

hi
there is a workaround. Leave your router settings as it is. setup a DNS server on your server2003, and in each of the clients, edit the TCPIP settings and manually assign the DNS address. Use your server address for the DNS address, this will make them use the server2003 machine as their preferred DNS server. Restart the clients, and it should be okay

Good time to learn how to use available assets to answer your questions.
Start by going to Technet [MS's web site] and look up DNS configuration. Once you understand MS's DNS design the pieces will fall into place.
As a hint review what goes in the Forwarders tab in DNS server.
