Hi all. My roomate downloads movies with .bittorrent client (p2p network). I don't care what he does except that now my internet conneciton is 10 times slower than normal. It's too slow to play WoW now.
Is there anything I can do about this problem, besides asking him to stop downloading, which I already tried?
BTW: My comptuer is connecting to the comcast router (actually it's netgear) via a wireless connection.
thanks!

Traffic-Shaping would help. Usually its not the download that sucks, but the upload in a p2p network.
You can buy a new router which support traffic-shaping or use some driver like cFos.

You could ask your roommate to install an application like netlimiter to throttle the speed that his bittorrent app uses.

I assume finding a new roommate is out of the question. Well, there are many bittorrent applications that both throttle the upload/download speed AND schedule more convenient times to automatically d/l files. Here's one as an example:
http://azureus.sourceforge.net/
Figure out a time when d/ling files isn't going to interfere with your gaming and get him to schedule the d/ls for those times. If he doesn't want to do that your choices are limited: Either put up with it, buy him his own T1 line, or find a new roommate.

Most Torrent Clients have settings that can be set to limit the download and upload speeds.
Fed up with Windows? Try Ubuntu Linux

Simple enough, when you want to play, unplug him. When you're done, plug him back in.

Here is the problem. People seem to think that on a shared connection the OTHER person is sucking all the bandwidth. If you understood it a bit more you'd realize two people in fact share the true bandwidth fairly. I wouldn't blame the ISP rather I'd suspect that under high use your cheap soho router is proving it is really a cheap old hub. Any time you go above 30-40% your system will actually go slower. I'd say get a enterprise level switch and set it up and you will get some better numbers. Or get your own ISP.

Smack yer roomate on his nose with a newspaper, and in a firm voice, say, NO, BAD BOY!, NO! ;-)
