Dear All,
I am having a problem and I hope you can help... my appologies for the long winded explination but hopefully this will enable you to better understand my problem. Many Thanks in advance.

I have recently set up a purely Windows 2000 network at home. This consists of 1 server running Windows 2000 Advanced Server, which has been promoted to a domain controller (i.e. Active DIrectlry has been installed)and is currently hosting the domain for my network.

Three other computers are used as workstations and are running Windows 2000 Professional.

Another 3 computers are running headless (i.e. without a monitor, mouse or keyboard). One acts as an intranet web server, another as a print server and the other as file server.

Just for the record, all machines have had recent fresh installs of Windows 2000 and have all the latest drivers, patches and service pack 3.

My problem is this:

I want to create a situation where by I can log onto any computer (out of the three workstations) and have not only my settings and preferences, but all my files as well.

I understood this to be a roaming user profile, but after a little reading it seems that this term is purely for settings (wallpaper, shortcuts etc)

I have created 3 users via Active directory, all placed in their own Organisational Unit.

Obviously for this to work I need to configure all the settings and files to be saved on the server.

Do i have to configure both the users home folder and the profile to look to the server?

When I read about roaming user profiles on msdn and in books it only ever talk about settings etc. Why does roaming user profiles never mention files as well..

I am totally confused....

Also i dont seem to have the opton to change the users i have created from a local to a roaming user on the server... any ideas wh not?

Another thing is... why do i have to create this shared file called profiles on the server etc that i keep reading about...

I thought all those settings were kept in the same place as the files... (i.e. c:\documents and settings\username)

Am I going totally mad?

Do I have two tings confused with each other...

Any help or advice would be great, either here or via email...

Again, many thanks if you battled on till the end.

Kind Regards

David Couzens

I'm more familiar with NT rather the 2k server, but I think roaming profiles principles are similar. The profiles do include files - but just the my documents folder within the profile folder (so if you keep all your files in your 'my documents' folder, this will be saved with your roaming profile on the server. Issue here is if your files occupy a lot of space, they have to be downloaded/uploaded when you log on/off).
On the server, local profiles (ie, for logging onto the server) will be kept in the normal place for win2k - as you say Documents and Settings. But for domain users, using roaming profiles, you specify a location where this profile is stored (it can be in documents and settings on the server if you wish). You should copy a suitable profile to this location before first logging in (eg, log on to workstation, set user up as you would like, then use the copy to facility for profiles in system properties to copy it to server - you'll need to log on as someone else with Admin privileges to do this).
On the files front, you can also specify an area on the server for as a 'home directory' for any domain user (with associated mapped drive letter). The user can then kkep files there and they will be available from any workstation as same drive. Like location of profiles, you set this in user manager on NT server - i think its something in AD on 2k - but I'm sure you can find it.
Hope this helps
