I want to make a network cable. I think what I need to do is to put RJ45 connectors onto each end of a CAT 5E cable. Is this right? Will it work? Is there anything else I need to worry about?

Are there any compatibility problems with RJ45 jacks and CAT cables? What will be the effect of running the cable alongside a power cable (mains - 240V) for about 1 metre?
