OS: Win XP Home CPU/Ram: P3/256MB Comment: I have a high-speed cable Internet connection, which worked fine till I bought a router and connected a laptop. The PC is running on WinXP Home and the laptop on Win95. When I connected everything, the laptop could connect through the router, and it could do the 192.168.1.1 setup. However, the PC (on which the Internet was set up originally) won't connect. I have spent 2 hours on the Linksys tech support doing everything from IP release and renews to an actual firmware upgrade for the router, but nothing works. I've even formatted my hard drives and reinstalled XP, to no avail. If I disconnect the router and plug the cable modem straight back into the PC, and reboot, the PC Internet connection works fine again. I've also tried switching cables and ports on the router ... no probs with them. Any suggestions??? Hi get all the detail from your router eg; ip of the local gateway (not external internet gateway) via using the win 95 pc, doing the 192.1.1 thing (login to router) now on the xp pc click settings\networkconnections\ double click on the LAN icon, lan status\support tab address type should be assigned via DHCP, pc ip address should be like 192.168.2.1 (as an example ) subnetmask 255.255.255.0 default gateway 192.xxx.xxx.xxx x = numbers the xp pc ip address should be different between the 2 pcs usually incremented. your router should assign a range of ip addresses, 192.168.2.1 - 192.168.2.40 so the xp pc should have an ip in this range. if not; set up via static ip the xp pc, it may be your pc has an ip out side the range your router can handle, also check your router has NAT and DHCP enabled. to set up static ip right click on LAN connection in setting\network etc click properties hi lite tcp/ip click properties 'use following ip address', now input a ip address eg 192.168.yyy.xxx y = same as win 95 pc x is incremented by + 1 subnet mask 255.255.255.0 gateway , your internal ip default gateway from the info off the 95 pc. Reply: Thanks for the help. At least we are moving forward. I've now manually configured the XP PC with IP addresses and DNS serbers obtained from the working 95 laptop. I am now able to ping the router and other web sites, which I couldn't do before. But I still can't connect through Internet Explorer, Outlook Express or MSN messenger. It's so weird! What now?

Hi if you can ping www.google.com ok, then the prob (i think) now lies with your browser, just to check tho, on the xp pc in command line , type; ipconfig /all you should now have dhcp ; enabled ip address (eg;192.168.2.2) subnet mask 255.255.255.0 default gateway (eg;192.168.2.1) dhcp server 192.168.2.1 dns server\ lease obtained etc etc if that looks ok now open your browser, IE 6 , click tools \internet options\connections tab click "never dial a connection" , apply ok (boxes grey out,) (sounds daft but you want to connect thro LAN ) now try www.google.com hopefully this time your on line , i'll watch for your reply , couldnt find last post to follow up. check your xp firewall is switched off (for now) start\settings\networkconect's right click \properties\advanced uncheck f/w if ut switches off the internet for no reason , use ipconfig /all to see if any setting has changed g ip address or may be lease is expiring.
