I can not renew or release IP address. Tryed 2 PCI network cards and 1 ISA, cables changed 3x. All of the hardware is working fine on other computers
Can not release ip
If click on RENEW then I'm getting the error:
dhcp server unavailable: renewing adapter
Can not ping other computers on the LAN even if I assign static IP addressReinstalled Win98.
Stll the same problem.
In device manager - no conflicts
All drivers updated
Bios updatedIf I connect cable modem - same thing - problem still exist.
Please help,
vector

bootin safe mode, goto the device manager, remove all network cards except the one you are using. reboot to normal mode, make sure staic IP is not set, if that does not fix the problem try changing the NIC. If the IP address you are trying to renew is 169.x.x.x, the problem has to bebetween the local NIC and the switch

ok try unistalling and intalling the NIC in the normal mode and also select the option "obatain DHCP address automatically".
if you get the address 169.*.*.* try releasing and renewing the address.

make sure before you go thru all these hoops that you FIREWALL software, like ZoneAlarm, is NOT running. It it is then you will get messages like this if you have not included your local subnet in the trusted zone.

There is no firewall, antivirus or anything. Just fresh installation of Win 98SE. obtaining DHCP automatically is selected,
CAN NOT release or renew...

Do you still have the Dialup adapter installed? If so, make sure that the ethernet adapter is selected when doing WINIPCFG.

here is a problem: The problem is with Win98 or ME. If I install Win XP - then everything is working perfect.
Any ideas? (I have the latest drivers for NIC an the latest BIOS)vector

The problem is with your access point(AP) router. The router isn't releasing your MAC address.
Solution: Turn off all computers, router/AP and DSL modem (if applicable). Next turn on the router/AP wait until diags are done. Next turn on DSL modem, wait for solid link light. Next press and hold the rest button on your router/AP until the default setting are restored. Then turn on your computers. These steps are more clearly spelled out in the Linksys DSL/Router owners manual. This solution, although not written as a solution; it was written as a setup step, worked like a charm for me. Good luck

I have the extact same problem. I use a laptop on a daily basis and it has worked flawlessly for years...until this morning. I can not, for the life of me, get win98 to release the 169.x.x.x ip. I also can not change the default route by hand ('route' command). I get either "Error 87" or "destination does not exist". The only thing I did between now and yesterday was install the more recient windows update DX9 critical update. The access point confiuration hasn't changes in over a year. All the other machines on the network can release/renew just fine.

hmmm... It is a problem in w2k and wxp (pro
& home). I had exact problem on 3 computers
and on 2 different networks, but just on
windows. Example why i think it's a windows
problem: one pc with wxp and linux, same
network configuration (no firewall sw). On
win works communication on LAN and ping to
public (inet) ip, on linux everithing works
fine. There is only one solution (what i
know) that works fine: reinstall your win.
