I have a computer on a college network with connectivity to the Internet. Every so often, the comp is unable to get out to the Internet and I have to renew the IP. After talking with the college's tech support, they do not have a solution from their end. The OS is WinME and the network is DHCP, although I've made the IP static and it still won't work. Any suggestions? Please no obvious solutions, I'm a networking tech and have tried all that I know.

Well, to start with ME isn't the best operating system MS ever came up with. If possible, go to 98, 2000, or XP.

Second, if the network you are on is using DHCP, you don't want to statically assign your IP, eventually you will have an IP address conflict and make it so not only your computer, but somebody elses will be unable to get connectivity. From the sounds of it, your tech guys need to have another look at how they have DHCP setup. To my way of thinking, that's where the problem is.

If you are asking for help and saying not to give obvious answers it makes it a bit tough. When you can not connect, what IP does the machine have at that time? When you can't connect, can you still ping another host? We'll need some info on what works and what doesn't if you want help.

How long of a lease time does DHCP give out?

Ummm....Your IP should not be set to static when you're behind a DHCP server.

The DHCP server is the one responsible in assigning you the IP.
