Hi all,

I have a DAT tape drive that i', using on a server in the office. Anyone know how i can get this on the LAN and so place it on a remote location for added security.

Otherwise, can someone recommend a tape drive that has ethernet connectivity so i can use it as a storage location on a LAN?

Thanks

To my knowledge you can't use a tape drive as online storage. You would use a NAS unit for that.

Having the tape drive is only half the equation. You need software. Backup Exec with remote agents will meet your requirements for lan based backups and remote backups of servers.

Imagine the power if you knew how to internet search

Actually, it is kind of "on the LAN" already. By that I mean, the server it's in is already on the LAN isn't it?

Your server isn't already in a "secure" location? If not, the big question is "Why not!?"

Here's how it usually works.

You have your server(s) located in a locked, air conditioned room that also has backup generator and UPS.

You have a tape backup installed in the server with appropriate backup software. You perform nightly backups. Each morning you swap out the tape from last night's backup for the backup tape for tonight. You take the backup tape from last night's backup to it's offsite storage location.

The preference always being, have your backup, or a copy of it, stored offsite in case of catastrophy (like major fire or flood). Having a backup stored beside the server you've just backed up won't help much if your building burns down (ie: backup burns up with server which not only gets burned, but soaked with water).

Gents,

thanks for the feedback, but i know all the above. What i was looking for is a solution whereby i can perform backups to a tape drive based at a remote site. We already have a working, local tape storage solution, but would also like a remote solution for added security.

Any ideas (no need for lectures though, thanks) :)

Good luck on that! Wait until you see the lag times depending on your "remote" bandwidth.

You should not be considering tape but disk to disk backups offsite. Way faster.
