I have 1 router with 2 ports. A wireless laptop and a ethernet desktop are connected to same router. I want to operate the desktop from my laptop at home only. this is my first time dealing with networking

You would need xp pro to use Remote desktop. Other people use variations of VNC and things like PCAnywhere.

If you are using it at home it should be pretty easy. They have to have the software and the network has to allow the software. That means maybe firewalls be modified to allow the application. Also the IP path has to be open. Ports may need to be opened (I don't exactly know your situation) IP might be easier if on same subnet.

"Best Practices", Event viewer, host file, perfmon, antivirus, anti-spyware, Live CD's, backups, are in my top 10
