Hi Folks,

I have a 1 Mbps Internet connection (Leased Line)configured in Cisco 1721 router. And i want to take control of a remote PC through remote desktop connection.Other end computer is connected to internet through dialup. Both the ISPs public IPs are different.

I am able to ping the Serial port of the Cisco 1721 router through the dialup internet connection from remote PC. But i am neither Telnet the router nor connect to the remote desktop of the PC connected with the router.

I need to know, Is it possible to take control of a PC through Internet using remote desktop connection?

If so, what are the settings required in the router to enable the remote desktop connection. Public IP is used in both the interfaces ( Serial & Ethernet)

Kindly help me to enable to take the control of the PCs through internet using Remote desktop connection.

Thanks in advance

Asai

I may not be the right person to comment on this but I think you might need to enable 'Port Forwarding' on the router.
Also if you cannot telnet to your router from local machine then try using the web interface. Its usually provided with routers and is accessible through the internal IP address of your router (I have never used CISCO equipment so cann't say for sure in this case.)

Hope this helps.

Hi obsaeed,

I am able to Telnet the router from the LAN. But i am not able to Telnet the router from remote computer. Moreover Cisco does not support Webinterface.

Let me know how to do port forwarding in the Cisco router.

Thanks in Advance

... and with a dial up connection in the mix it is going to be very, very slow. You will probably find yourself waiting ten minutes betwen each mouse click. Bear in mind that the remote PC connected via dial-up will only be sending data at 33kbs.

As I said; I do not have experience with CISCO equipment, so may be googling will help you to know how to set up IP forwarding on CISCO through Telnet. This is one time setting that needs to be completed on the machine connected locally with the Router. I can assure you though it is possible to enable IP forwarding through Telnet.

Once you have enabled these setting when you want to connect to the machine remotel simply use 'Remote Desktop' and use public IP address to connect to the machine. It will be like you are connecting to it over LAN.

Remote Desktop uses TCP RDP protocol at 3389 port.

Hope it helps.
