Comment:

I have a problem with RDC and I can't figure out what's causing it. I'm getting a "This computer can't connect to the remote computer." error.

Facts:
- I can connect to PC1 locally perfectly fine but not from the WAN IP (xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:5801).
- PC1's IP is 192.168.1.99 and port 5801 is forwarded to that IP from the router.
- Port 5801 is already added to the exclusion's list on Windows Firewall.
- Both on XP Pro.

I have a PC2 which is set up the same way, just different IP and port number and I can connect to it fine from the WAN IP. PC1 is the problem. Any other suggestions on where I should look to solve this?

Nat on both sides must be enabled. Sometimes simple upnp will set that up.

UPNP is the badest way to solve such problems, because you never really know, what happens at your network.
So it's always a good idea to configure such things by your own.
So you always know which ports are open any whatfor the ports are open.

UPNP is like "I don't know what I'm doing, but I do".

So open a dos box and try
netstat -anb | more

Look for the port 5801.
Is there an application listed, listening to that port?

If so, try an online port scanning to port 5801.
Is the port found as an open port?

Are you running any 'security suite' software that includes a firewall componant.

Can you PING the one machine from the other?

I agree, UPNP should be shot and killed rather than used. The security risks simply are NOT worth using, to say nothing of the headaches related to UPNP.
