I am unable to close some remote desktop connections without rebooting the server. If I highlight them and select disconnect I get a message that the 'handle is invalid'. Anyone have an idea on how to manually close a session?

From the server, do this – When you hit your Max connection for RDP

C:>query session [Enter]

C:>reset session 1 [Enter]

C:>reset session 2 [Enter]

Then you can reconnect via RDP now.

Thanks for responding to this question. In following your advice, I was able to query the sessions and run the reset. However, I backed off doing the reset when I got the message that áll sessions using this protocal will be reset'. I was concerned that all the valid users who were actively using connections would be booted off also. If I do this reset, will it kill just the session I entered? Thanks again for you input.

I believe what JackR meant when he said

C:> reset session 1 [enter]

was

C:> reset session <enter the session number you wish to kill here> [enter]

That how I read it so if correct you will only be killing the individual session not all the sessions.

Thanks for confirming this. I have entered the following command:
reset session RDP-Tcp#236 in the command window. The screen looks like it just hangs. I get no response and eventually have to do a CTL/C to close the screen. The session still shows as connected. Am I doing this correctly? If so, any other ideas? Thanks for all your help.
