Remote access to serial port

Hi there,
I have little experience and find today that I am unable to connect to a remote serial port I previously could connect to. I cannot get to the location but can contact someone there if needs be. I am prompted for the password when trying to ssh but when I enter it it just hangs. Are you able to provide me with some advice on this as to where the problem may lie? As I'm prompted for the password I wonder at what stage it might be failing.
Any suggestions or advice you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Not sure what to say.
Repost this question maybe.
Tell us a bit more.
Did you used to supply password?
Do you mean that you connect SSH to a terminal then to a serial port or what?
"Best Practices", Event viewer, host file, perfmon, antivirus, anti-spyware, Live CD's, backups, are in my top 10

I've seen things like that happen to BSD servers when there's not enough memory available to launch the shell. SSH is running in the background so it's reserved & passes authentication, but you get no login shell.
I had some rogue processing killing everything - dunno if this applies to you...You've tried rebooting it?
Is it still passing traffic (or whatever it's suppose to be doing) ?
