i too have a netgear router and use it remotely. in the router settings, i have remote access enabled and i am using port 8080 (i think this was the default). you do not need to have 21 or 80 in use to do remote access.

so, for example, if i wanted to connect to my router i would type this in my url, where x is your IP.

http://xx.xx.xx.xx:8080

What kind of access are you talking about? If you'd just like to be able to logon to your computer from a remote location, the simplest way would be to go into your router's setup and forward port 3389 directly from your WAN port to your computer's local IP address. You'd then be able to connect to your computer by using the remote desktop client (included in XP Pro, downloadable for earliear Windows OSes) from the remote machine. Just enter your WAN IP address when connecting with the Remote Desktop client, and you will be able to logon as if you were sitting at your own machine.

FYI, you're opening up a serious security hole by doing this, especially since you just posted your WAN IP address on a public forum.

i would like to simply be able to view my files via ftp. remote desktop is not of a great importance. when you say WAN ip address, which is that?

My netgear mr814 has the ability to remotely access the router via the web. This is different then allowing access to a pc thru a router but gaining access to a pc via the web is doable.

bert, plz stand corrected. netgear routers most defintely have remote access. if you have a netgear router and know how to use it you would know this.

i would also suggest you disable your anonymous account (which is active) and change your IP that you have so freely broadcast to this forum...

i suggest that westwood, should remove whatever has been inserted.......
well, my mr314 doesnot have an option to enable remote access whatsoever. However, it IS remotely accessible, as i have previously logged onto it from a remote station.

Not all NETGEAR routers have the same software.

Do not suggest inability to others. Arrogance is only apparent from thoes who know little.

b.t.w my guest account has never been enabled.
