I have a linksys router and I have set it up as a DHCP server. I have connected it to two computers and one gets a dybnamic IP and the other does not. I checked winipcfg and it says the IP is 169.254.174.163. Where did it get this IP. I cannot release it either

This is an automatic IP address assigned to the computer when it is set to recieve an IP through DHCP but cannot locate the DHCP server. Check all connections between the computer and router. Ensure that the link lights are on for both the port on the router and the NIC card in your machine. Check your ethernet cable (switch it if you can) or give it a little wiggle where the RJ-45 plugs into the NIC.
You can't release the 169.254.x.x addresses. Just try ipconfig /renew or reboot and it will try to reach the DCHP server.

Hello Bobo You got the ip for the DHCP it signs it automatically. If you want to release it go to: start, run type: ipconfig /release and the ip address. enter. If this does not help try ipconfig /flushdns enter and them again try ipconfig /realease and type the ip address.
