Specs: Windows XP
Hi.. I want to install our current Windows Server 2003 on a new machine to be held as a back up. Can i Do this with the OEM software we received when we bought the original server from Dell? If so are all the licenses included? Thanks

Can't do that with OEM software

A new install is not a backup of the original. Using it if the main server dies won't work.

There are many problems with what you propose.

How about we start with what you have and where you want to go with it.

Currently have Dell SC440 runnning Windows Server 2003 R2 standard edition SP2 with 5 CALS plus a 5 pack of CALS total 10.. I am looking to buy another server to have as a back up incase of failure of server (which happened before).. i am religious about backing up so not worried about loss of data but rather being down for a while waiting for new server to arrive etc. Wanted to buy new server now, have it ready to go to just load data (manufacturing software and such) and have it up fast. I wanted to know if I should purchase all new 2003 server software and have it loaded on machine OR will I able to load existing licenses and such on new unit to have waiting as back up.. The existing server has Raid1 with two drives and would REALLY like to just swap out one of the drives but willing to load onto new drives of new machine.. Parinoid of server failure AND not being able to run for a while

Hope this makes sense and thank you...

yes it makes perfect sense

When you purchased the DELL did you get an extended warranty/service plan?

You would need to have the EXACT same hardware as the existing Dell server to be able to take a drive out of the existing server and place it in the additional hardware.

What are you using presently for backup?

It sounds to me like he just needs a redundant DC.

ie: I am looking to buy another server to have as a back up incase of failure of server
