I had a new HD installed and Windows XP Home Edition reinstalled on my desktop. The wireless network is working, but I can't get the workgroup up and running.

My router is hardwired into my desktop. My laptop has a wireless card, and can connect to the internet.

Before having the OS reinstalled, the workgroup was working.

I can't ping (by IP address or name) the laptop from the desktop, or the desktop from the laptop. Computers are in the same workgroup with different names.

I shut down the MS firewall and turned off WEP in the router. No effect.

After the reinstall, my desktop IP address changed from 192.168.1.33 to ..1.34, so I made appropriate changes, including changing the "IP Pool Starting Address" (from .33 to .34) in the router.

In the TCP/IP properties of each computer, I have selected "Obtain IP address automatically." I notice that the MS support site recommends assigning specific addresses, but do so doesn't seem to solve my problem.

Network Connections in desktop Control Panel shows a 1394 Connector and a Local Area Connector. The LAC has-
Client for MS Networks
File and Printer Sharing
QoS Packet Scheduler
TCP/IP

The TCP/IP Properties include: Obtain IP address automatically, Obtain DNS server address automatically, (in Advanced) IP DHCP Enabled, and Default for NetBios Setting (I changed that to Enable NetBios over TCP/IP without effect).

So, I'm stumped. I've rebooted router and computers.

Thanks for your help.

Chris

"Can't get the workgoup up and running" isn't very specific.

Do you have a Firewall enabled? Have you enabled File Sharing?

Life is more painless for those who are brainless.

I don't know that the Ping command requires the computers to be in the same workgroup. Can both computers access the modem & router setup pages via browser?
