The internet went out on one of our XP machines. I beileve the TCP/IP stack is corrupted, (when I ping 127.0.0.1 it says pinging then of saying the address it displays a wierd symbol not involved in the english language) I tried reinstalling the network card, now I want to try the TCP/IP stack. Also a note, I know the computer was infected with a trojan downloader at the least. I imagine it had alot of spyware etc... to. Thanks for any advice offered!

You can uninstall/reinstall the TCP/IP stack easily enough. Go into network properties and then go into the property sheet for your NIC. Click on TCP/IP to highlight it and then click the Remove button. Once it's removed, reboot then readd it and see if that doesn't clear things up.
If it does, may I recommend downloading Ad Aware and Spybot S&D and running them to remove spyware and you could also do an online virus scan at Trend Micro.

I fixed the glitch I was having. On top of this it will also repair your winsock. Do a google search for:
