try right mouse clicking on the icon and enable the radio. should be a choice at the top of the menu.

thanks wanderer when i right click i get message...open network connections and view available networks! no joy! Any advice on idiot proof guide to wireless networking :0)

Click "View available networks" and see what is available. If a wireless network is available you will see it from there and it is relatively simple to connect from that point.
