Realtek NICs fail with crossover cables

With a 10 Base T crossover cable, two PCs can be networked via the RJ45 ports of the respective NICs. However if the network interface card employs a Realtek RTL8029(AS), the connection fails, even though the same NICs work OK from a 10 Base T hub or using the 10 Base 2 (Coax) ports. Has anyone had this experience and been able to correct it?
