trying to help out my brother, he has 2 pcs each running XP, connected to the internet through a router (Network Everywhere model NR041). this setup works on DSL, however he has now switched to cable internet access. internet access works fine when you do not use the router, that is, when you run straight through from the cable modem to the first pc, but if you put the router into the circuit, internet access is not working.
I don't know anything about routers so do you need to make configuration changes to the router when you change internet service like this? any other help would be appreciated... Al

Your brother's router needs to pick up the new IP address from the cable company. Sometimes it's as simple as turning off the modem and the router (unplug them), and then start the modem and wait until the activity light is flickering, then turn on the router. You may need to use the router's configuration utility to tell it to renew its IP address. The manual for the router should tell you how to gain entry to the setup utility.

It;s also possible that your router is configured for pppoe that bellsouth uses. Most cable does not use pppoe. You may have to turn it off in the router.

got the router working ok on cable. yes, the problem was that the router was configured for pppoe and needed to be changed to the cable setting. once that was done, everything works OK. never done one of these before, so could have saved myself a trip to his place if I had checked for the address to get into the router configuration, oh well, now I know, Al
