My first post so go easy on me :-)

I have 2 Pcs running windows vista & a linksys wag54gxvs wireless router + have just purchased a HP 5550n Laserjet printer.

What I want to do is connect my 2 pcs + printer all into the router via ethernet cables so both Pcs can access the printer. The 2 pcs are connected to the router via ethernet cables already & work fine. As it stands I have a USB printer which the host computer needs to be turned on to use the printer from the "2nd" computer. This isn't any use to me anymore & it would be much better the new way.

I have connected the printer to the router via an ethernet cable but my computer cannot find it. Do I need to do something? I have downloaded the drivers from HP for the printer & installed but they cannot find the printer either. I haven't tried using a USB lead to install the printer as you would a normal printer because I don't want it to work this way. I presume if I did then it will run off the PC fine.

Hope someone can give me a little pointer..

Thanks

Chris

the printer should be assigned an ip address or hostname which you will need to access the printer facilities, if you have no way of finding by the printer then try logging onto the router and looking at the currently connected devices

once you have the IP, type \\<ip/hostname here> then you should be able to right mouse mutton and connect..

Of course it depends on the printer, you may have to go into 'my network plaes' and enable 'show icons for networked uPNP items' and it may apear there

hope this helps

Andy

for example, if the IP address is 192.168.0.55 you would type \\192.168.0.55 into the address bar

to ping, or not to ping is the question..LOL

from you run type in "CMD"
A black box would appear like this

C:>

type in ping, the the IP address

Example

C:>ping X.X.X.X [enter]

the x.x.x.x is the printer ip address.

Ok, I think I got it.

Go into my router settings

See if there is IP address for attatched printer.

This will be 000.000.0.0 or whatever

I get dos promt up & type:

ping 000.00.0.0 (0's being the numbers the router shows me)

What if I can't ping it? does that mean I have to enable IP address for printer inside the printer settings? Fairly sure that it is possible via the lcd screen on the printer.

yes, you need to address the printer with a IP addreess in that range, with a subnet mask and default gateway, which would be your router IP address.. , then try ping it then.. from your computer , after you can ping setup a TCP/IP printer, make sure you have the correct printer drivers on hand before you do this step. you would use the pinter IP address, when setting up a TCP/IP printer. There are howto on the web to show you how to do all of this, just google it..LOL

Here is a link to setup the TCP/IP printer

You need to configure the IP information for the printer through it's interface (the LED and buttons on it)....not through Windows or the router.

Get the manual out that came with the printer and it will tell you how to enter the IP address, subnet mask and gateway (not neeeded but put the IP of the router in here).

It's important to use an IP that's not in the DHCP scope. You can check within the router's management interface under DHCP to see what IP's it's using for the scope. Most use .100 to .199

If that's true for yours, just use .10 or something like that.

As has been previously stated, the IP does need to be in the same subnet so all devices can connect.

Once you have the IP info properly assigned to the printer, you can then http into the management interface by typing the IP address in the URL field of your web browser.
