I am making one last stab at finding help on this. If you can suggest anything, please post.

MyNetworkPlaces/EntireNetwork/MSWindowsNetwork/MSHome(this is my workgroup name),

there is no computer shown (in fact, nothing shows at all when I click on MSHome). I have run the setup wizard till I am blue in the face, but simply cannot make the computer find itself. Does anyone know how? (I believe that I need this in order for other computers on the lan to find this computer).

Facts:
This new computer can ping the older computer, but not vice versa.
both computers can ping themselves and the router (Uniden)
File and Print Sharing is enabled on both
both NICs light up OK.
Workgroup names are identical
XP Home in use on both
Zonealarm turned off when attempting to config the nework.
Cables have been substituted from known good installations.

Now What? TIA

Delete any and all network bridges. Make sure computer names have no underscores_ or odd characters(dash is ok) and is less than 15 characters long. Turn off the Internet Connection Firewall on both. Uninstall Zonealarm on both. Turn off both and turn back on. Try sharing a folder on each. And stop running the wizard.

Blin, Sorry, what is "net view"?

DarkFriend,

What is a network bridge and how do you delete one?

When you say "Uninstall Zonealarm on both", do you mean using add/delete software, or just turn off?.

"Turn off both and turn back on." Computers?

Try sharing a folder on each. Only a folder, not C: ?

Have stopped running the wizard as nothing is accomplished.

Thanks to both

If you right click "My Network Places" and choose properties you will often find a network bridge after running the wizard.

Yes add/remove zone alarm. Even disabled it is a file sharing mass murderer.

Yes turn off both computers. One of them is the "master browser" which holds all the networking info. Shutting them down will reset this.

You don't have to share the whole C: drive but hey, as long as something has that stupid little hand under it, that's cool.

Good stopping the wizard it doesn't do anything after file sharing is turned on. You only have to do it once.

And don't forget to turn off the Internet connection firewall.

Thanks for the followup. I am sharing the internet connection with others, so can only get on part of the time. Will be out of town for the next couple of days, but will do as you suggest when I return, then repost this as it will have dropped off the horizon by then.

DF, You certainly were spot on about ZA. Uninstalled it and voila-both computers can now ping each other.

Unfortunately neither can "see" the new computer. The new one does not show up in My Network Places nor in Workgroup on the older.

The newer cannot see anything under My Network Places, including itself. (The entire C: drive is shared BTW.)

What now?
