Hi,
I am planning to have a server behind my linksys router. I have a cable connection ad it has a DHCP address. I want to access this computer from anywhere. But the address might change becaus eof DHCP. Is there a way to publish the DHCP adress from the router to email me from the server behind the counter?

Thanks
Kart

if your PC is behind the router, you can set that IP as static (192.168.1.2)

however if u mean get the WAN address of your router...

are you under a cable connection, most do not allocate you a new IP unless your Modem is off for more than 24 hours...

You could add a startup webpage which means everytime you log on, that page is accessed and hopefully you will know how to implement a simple script that will grab your WAN ip and log it to a file/send it to yr email

Here is what I did:

I made aweb page on my free web space with a free counter that logs ip addresses. Basically, when ever someone goes to the page, it records their IP adress. Then on my home computer I set up a schedualed task (you can use windows task scheduler) to visit that web page every 12hrs(you can set any interval you want). SO, every 12 hours my computer accessese the web page which logs its ip. THen from any computer in the world I can view the log at my web site to see waht the latest IP adress was.

You would not access your server by the ip address of your wan port but by its lan address. It is your wan port dhcp address you are concerned about right?

Since your server is on your lan and you want to use dhcp for your lan connections there is what is called a reserved address in dhcp.

You do this in two parts. Ipconfig /all will give you your mac address. Next you go into the router and the lan settings. Here you can add a computer name, its mac address and what ip address you always want it having. Say OK and then click on apply. Now this server will always have the same ip address but served out with dhcp.

You may find you need to enable ports on your router to allow yourself remote access. Consider carefully what you open. You don't want to enable say the msblaster ports for example.
