Protocol for send message over LAN

Specs: Windows
Hello and hi there..
I'm a final year student and would like to make an integrated application which will enable all of the students and lecturer to simply chat with each other through a simple program.

But first, I need to make a research on the protocol and architecture of sending a message through LAN. Hope someone can provide me with the answer.

Thank you. :)

You might want to consider not reinventing the wheel.

Google lan chat software so you can see what I mean.

A one sentence question will result in a one sentence answer.
