Hello,

i have two computers in my house both running XP. they are connected with a microsoft wireless router. The host computer works just fine. my problem is in the client computer. It says it is connected, but the ip address is apparently wrong. i have tried to repair the ip address automatically, and it doesn't work. i have typed in ipconfig in the command window, and even pinged it. i have tried to manually configure it, and it did not work. i have tried to manually configure the ip address, and i still can't get online. i have gone into the LAN settings, and tried everything there, and still no sucess. i must be doing something wrong, but i can't figure out the correct ip address is so that i can get online. i do not know if i have some sort of virus or something that is changing the ip address. Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your consideration in this matter.

sincerely,
Ken

Clone all the settings from the host pc to the client except add a 1 to the last number. Make sure you include the dns servers since they are very valueable to web surfing

i think it might work, but when you say add a 1 to the last number, which number do you mean? Thank You for your prompt reply to my query.

if the host address is 192.168.1.1 then the client will be 192.168.1.2..Understand?

vegaskid6257, what is the "wrong" IP address of the "client" computer?

first of all, the term host/client can't be used in your case unless you connect second pc to internet through first one.

Are you only getting auto config ip 169.254.x.x or just all 0s? Have you configured WEP or MAC control on your router? is your second pc detecting wireless network at all? many issues could cause you not getting ip address. You have to provide more precise info for us to pinpoint the issue.

You're right, but who cares? This terminology gets misused all the time by people who don't know any better. But in the context of this thread, everyone knows what's being referred to by "host" and "client."

First let me apologize for using the wrong terminology and offending you guys. secondly, i tried to clone the ip address from the computer that is wired directly to the cable modem. (not the host! lol)i changed the number, and it still does not work. when i auto config i get only 169.254.xx.xx. when i switch between manual and automatic, i get 0.0.0.0, until i repair it, and 169.254 comes up. it is detecting the wireless network because it says connnected, and the signal strength is all 5 bars. the router is fine. i must be doing something wrong. it is probably something easy, and i will feel stupid when i fix it. Thank you all for all the help you have offered.

Don't worry about terminology, we all misuse it. Hopefully one of the super techs will swing by here and get you up and running...

What happens when you physically connect the second computer to the router? Does it pick up an IP address? Even though you have 5 bars and all, make sure the SSID is the same on your computer as on the router, then right click on the systray icon and manually choose to connect to the router. Is WEP setup? If so, disable that until you have connected, then be sure to enter the WEP key on both the router and the computer.

HTH

I work for a big company with all kinds of terms, I apologize for that sh$t.
I would say check your router to see if dhcp is enabled, because if it's the wep issue, his wireless nic shouldn't show connectivity at all. so it's connected, just not getting ip address. LAN DHCP in router config is the first thing you should check.
I have 3 wireless pc at home, all with static ip pointing to the router ip as default gateway , you can try this, find router ip 192.168.x.1, then pick one that's not used by any other pc between 192.168.x.2-192.168.x.253, set dns server and default gateway to 192.168.x.1(or whatever your router ip is), then try, good luck.

Actually, with WEP enabled it will show connectivity with a good signal but not issue an IP address or let you "connect". Ran into this when I set up some wireless access points here at work.

It's possible it's an older computer. I am a tech - tried installing 2 wireless adapters into an Acer tower and they connect but no IP address appears except the 169.x.x.x address. Tried a USB wireless - same thing. On a newer computer - both cards work perfectly. It's not the router as I have other wireless PC's and laptops here working fine. When these cards are moved to the newer computers they all work flawlessly!

For the PCI card - it's something to do with the PCI slot version # - PCI 2.0 and 2.1 compliance. 2.1 doesn't work in 2.0 from what I have read. Why in the world the USB ones dont work is beyond me!
