I am trying to set up a wireless network between my computer and the family computer which has the internet. I managed to get the computers to see eachother last night but neither of the computers could use the internet. for some reason I have to disable the wireless on the family computer before it can use the internet, even though it is connected to the modem through a seperate ethernet card. Also this morning I turned on the computers and they couldent see eachother again. The family computer says it has %70 wireless reception so I dont think that is an issue. I have run the networking wizard on both the computers and as i said they could see eachother last night and use eachothers files. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

OK, I changed the ethernet card on the family computer with a newer one from another computer so I can use the internet without disableing the wireless now. The computers still dont see eachother. I dont have any firewall settings or any wireless encryption on at the moment so that cant be the problem either. My router was set to factory defaults which has stopped dropouts and IP problems, are there any settings I should look at? Thanks for any help.

Ok, I've got it going. I went to the internet connection proerties and clicked allow other people to use this connection, It gave me a few error messages about screwed up IP's and stuff but restarting and clicking the button a gazillion times made it finally decide to give in and just do what it was told. I can use the internet on both computers and grab files from each one too. (at least for now)
Ahhh...Umm... thanks... Mabee this could be helpfull to someone with the same problem.

#1. Get a wireless router for performance, stability, and security reasons. Internet Connection Sharing in Windows sucks!

#2. Make sure you setup encryption for your wireless network.

Heh. Sometimes just talking about a problem helps sort it out, doesn't it?

Your basic problem, as you found, was that your Ethernet connection wasn't set up to be shared with other PCs on your network. The Internet Connection Sharing Wizard should have set this by default.

Running the wireless networking wizard should have set your wireless network up correctly. Possibly your XP firewall was enabled sometime during this process and misconfigured. Check your wireless connnection and select "reconnect to this connection when in range" to make sure that when you reboot the machines the wireless network will come back up.

Heh I had the internet working for about three hours and then it died again. It turns out that to share the internet connection the computer was trying to use the same IP as my router which obviously caused a conflict, so I changed my routers IP and it worked for another five minutes.... It still isnt working, I have come to accept that I probbably wont get it working properly so I dont really care any more. At least I can share files and printers. Now that I have got the wireless going reliably I set 128Bit WEP encription, I live out in the sticks so I'm not really worried about people hacking my network. Thanks
