I am having a problem setting up a home LAN using my new D-Link DSS-8+ switch. When i hook the computers together they each have their own IP address and can all access the internet, but they cannot see each other on the network. I have tried running the network setup wizard but that does not help. Also, when i ping one computer's IP address, it does no seem to be on the network properly as the TTL is always about 32ms. When I plug the computers into my old router, they can all see each other right away. I do not want to use the router as i frequently need to remote desktop into the computers from work and setting up the port forwarding is a pain in the ass, I also do a lot of heavy file transfers between the computers and the routers performance is lacking, which is why i upgraded to a switch. Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

If your isp is only giving you one ip address your pcs can't all be on the internet. This is what a router can do that a switch can not do. It translates that one public ip to a multitude of private ip addresses on your lan.
A router provides the first layer of security by Network Address Translation and you have the port blocking feature which YOU HAVE TO HAVE if you don't want msblaster worms or their variants coming into your machines. You MAY ALREADY BE INFECTED.
So how about some configuration information
1. what is the ip range you are using?
2. each pc has a unique ip address?
3. file and print sharing enabled on each?
4. something shared on each?
5. if you logon to each pc using EXactly the SAME account name and PASSWORD can you access each pc from the others?
6. any local firewalls running?
