Hi all,
I am suffering a special problem.... I haven't seen this before :-(

I have bought an usb adaptor for a wireless link to my brother, and I am trying to set it up. I have the router set up correctly, as I am right now posting from another computer, via wireless...

This router has a dhcp server available, with a pool of 8 addresses, and there are only 2 computers that could connect to it.

Well, whereas my laptop can connect to the internet, with the ip provided dinamically from the router, the other computer cannot get any address from it. I cannot imagine the reason, but as i know the parameters, I have set the ip manually.

But this is the strange thing:

1.- Now I can ping my router.
2.- I can ping a dns server by typing its address (80.58.0.33)
3.- But I cannot resolve any name, i mean, i cannot ping www.google.com!!!!

I have set the same dns my laptop uses, and they are the same the router provides dinamically (dhcp..)

But this is strange...

Another fact, i cannot access the router html set up page from this computer, whereas from my laptop i can....

I have quitted both zone alarm and windows default firewall, and i still haven't advanced much...

Any ideas?

thx very much

if you can't ping any Internet host names, it's a DNS problem all the way, check and make sure your Pri DNS settings is pointing to a vailid DNS server.

If you have had to manually set the IP address of the system, make sure it is NOT one of the 8 that DHCP is using. But that it is still within the SubNet Mask range supported by the router. You will need to check the router settings. If you used one of the IP addresses within its DHCP range, it would get a little confused with what to do with DNS responses.

If the default setup for DHCP is not working I would suspect two things first. The drivers for the USB attach are not the latest version (check their web site for updates). Or the system has not been configured for Internet connections yet. I don't know about XP, but on Windows 98/ME you have to run the Internet Connection Wizard one before Internet access will work.

hi again,

The primary dns is 80.58.0.33, a valid DNS, and as I said, i can ping this host :-(

I already checked if I have space for another ip in the pool of the dhcp server, and I have, and of course, the ip i set up manually is not used by another machine.

The ip's are similar to 192.168.1.x/255.255.255.0:
- 1 for the router
- 100 for my laptop. The pool starts at 100 (my laptop takes its first ip).

As my other computer doesnt take from the router dhcp server any ip, I set up the ip 10...

I am right now downloading the latest drivers from conceptronics, and i'll install them.

i'll report back if this is solved. But i'm still confused about not being able to take one dhcp ip automatically, and being able to ping my primary dns (the one i'm using with my laptop) but not being able to resolve names... :-\

ehm, strange.

when I type "ipconfig /renew" the system tells me something like:
"Error renewing the wireless interface: You tried to make an operation over a non socket element"

Sorry for the message, I have translated it from spanish :-P

Perhaps I need to install somekind of protocol???

I already updated the driver, but the problem persists..

I'm having the exact same issue with a Linksys wireless usb adapter on a network. We got on fine with my laptop, another guy's laptop, yet this machine (only one with the usb type adapter) is having issues. I can ping www.google.com (by it's ip), but as soon as I try pinging by name, I have issues. I've tried to mimic the settings of the working machines to no avail.

The setup of this network is dsl modem to wireless router (Linksys). I've looked over every setting possible within the router config and am at a loss. I was over at this customer's site for a few hours yesterday testing things out. They ended up having a bad wireless usb adapter first, then this.

I've tried the newest drivers from Linksys as well.

Thanks,

Nick
