Ok here's the problem, I am trying to network Windows 98 laptop to my Windows XP Pro desktop pc. I have managed to get all the neccesory protocals on both computers setup, and managed to get them to connect using DCC through parallel port (LPT1). Only problem is that on the Win98 machine, when trying to view host, DCC asks for a password to connect to "\\INTEL\IPC$". (INTEL is my workgroup and yes they are set to INTEL on both machines)

Here is an image of the error dialog:

This was the closest I can get to get them to communicate. Earlier it just wouldn't find the host at all, but fixed it when I found out I had to install NetBEUI on the XP machine (XP doesn't have it installed by default).

Now it will find host, but password dialog will persist.

I have been able to view my laptop harddrive by adding "\\DELL_LATITUDE\LAPTOP" to my workgroup on XP with no problems.

But I want Win98 to do the same, plus it would be preferred that I also beable to share XP's internet to Win98. I have searched all over computing.net and other sites and can't find a solution.

I did make sure that I was logged in on the Win98 machine with the same username and password that is on my XP machine, but it still does it.

I have tried it both with passwords on and off and niether have any effect. I currently cannot get a eithernet or USB connection since I do not have a eithernet card for the laptop nor a USB cable. I do not have the money to invest in the parts needed since I will not have the laptop for long, since it isn't mine.(it was given to me to repair) I am currently trying to get it to connect to internet using my broadband, and right now networking it with XP is the only option.

And no I cannot use a phoneline to connect it to internet since I do not have a ISP registered, nor the phone line to connect it to.

I have tried setting the permissions for my shared resources on XP to "Everybody" and still no effect.

Help would be appreciated.

You need to make sure that when you're logging into the 98 machine, you use an account and password that also exists on the XP computer.

Life is more painless for those who are brainless.

Thats what I did, I logged in with EXACTLY the same username and password I used on the XP machine.

I tried tweaking settings and now it won't find the host anymore so I decided to stop screwing around with Win98 and upgraded it to Windows XP Pro, so now both computers has same OS and password problem has dissapeared.

But I need to figure out how to share the internet connection since the home networking wizard won't let me. (as in enable Internet Connection Sharing)

But there is a new problem, the XP server won't show up in the workgroup page. I made sure both had the same workgroup name and uniqe computer names, but the client won't see the server.

I have been able to ping in both directions and been able to access the clients files by adding it to network places, but no luck on the other, so that may also be preventing ICS from working.

Update:

Due to lack of replys, I decided to look for programs other then XP to share internet. I came across a program called "WinProxy", and it did the job. I entered the host's IP address and port in the client's lan settings lialog in IE and was able to connect to internet. Despite the slow parallel connection I was able to view web pages and download at roughly half the speed of my 1.5mb connection (downloads have spiked at 100KB/s and usually are sustained at 40-50KB/s, which is the same as what the host gets right now. So I may actually be getting the full 1.5mb. However downloading more then 1 file at a time presents problems. Parallel connections do have thier limits.

Well any way the problem is mostly solved now. Still can't get either computer to show up in the workgroup in Network places, but that is minor since I can add them manually by specifying their IP's instead of computer names. I have also been able to get remote desktop connection to work. I used laptop to control desktop with no problems.

"FYI. You can use the Command Prompt to share devices.."

You need to tell me the program to use in command prompt inorder to do that. I can't just pull one out of thin air. Command Prompt is used to start programs not share devices. I would need to know the name of the command prompt program to do that.
