I have some questions about wireless networking on the Mayhem G2.
I often have problems getting an IP address, even if the signal strength is showing very high on the Windows XP utility or the Intel Proset 8.0 utility.

If I use either utility and press "Connect" the computer hangs while it waits for an IP address. Then, when I press "repair" the computer hangs.

I end up rebooting a couple of times, hoping the wireless adapter loads properly and praying to connect.

I also uninstalled the Intel wireless utility to let Windows XP handle it, to avoid any conflicts of two utilities trying to manage my wireless.

I know it's not a problem with the router, as other computers within the same range are able to connect.

Also, when I type IPCONFIG- it says "Media disconnected." If I ping 127.0.0.1, I get good results (no dropped packets), but I don't know what this means.

Once I get an IP address assigned, the connection is good. No dropped signals or anything. It's very strange, because if I reboot 3 or 4 times, I can usually pick up the network by the 4th try. It only takes up to 15 minutes to get a wireless connection IP address assigned, and once that happens, I get good connection speeds 5 to 11 Mbps and strong signal and no dropped connections. Once my computer goes on standby, I lose the IP, and I have to go through the headache all over again. (I am tying to get the ABS guys to troubleshoot this for me as well, I'll let you know how it goes).

Do i need a new wireless driver?

is there a better wireless utility?

The driver version is Intel 8.0.12.9000

Thanks,

Rob

The IPConfig message is reporting on your "Hardwire" NIC card, NOT your wireless card, which is disconnected because your are wireless connected and not WIRED connected.

The 127.0.0.1 is a standard IP adress for the Hardwire NIC card. You use it to make sure your card is good or if its your cable. Pinging good to it means your Hardwire NIC card works. No relation to your wireless.

As for your wireless, youve takin a proper first step and disabled the 3rd party software. Just let XP do it... it causes problems if you use both.

The next thing is need more info on the XP wireless info you are getting. I.e. when you click to see "view wireless connections" is your wireless the only one listed? 2) in wireless advance is your wireless network first in your connection or somewhere further down the list? If so, move it up.
