problem with TCP/IP and NETBEUI

Comment:
I am trying to set up my home network. One W98 machine and one WINME machine. It was successful with NETBEUI. But i wanted to only use TCP/IP because i am aware that NETBEUI is not routeable. I did not think this would work when i tried to share my cable modem connection. Will i be able to share while useing NETBEUI? I would really like to know why the two machines cannot talk without NETBEUI.

Chris.
Theres no need of NETBEUI for comunication btw two PCs on network. Just assign static ip to each pc and u can communicate in any mean. i.e. data tranfer, file sharing and security policy....

Crhis, No reason why you cannot connect via just TCP/IP. Use 10.10.10.1 on one machine using 257.257.257.0 as subnet mask and 10.10.10.2 on the other with same subnet mask. Workgroup will be default workgroup. You can delete NETBUI from services.

my desktop (master) is hooked up to another hardrive (slave) using netbeui. I tried to hook up my laptop to this network using tcp/ip. the computers could see each other, but they would not work together (no files would open up etc.) I also have a cable modem high speed connection. any ideas?
