I am using different ways to connect my laptop to the internet depending where I am. The one I have problems with is a dial-up connection through a phone line using "9" to dial out. I also had to disable "waiting for a dialling" tone. Still it does not connect although it dials the number. The same settings work fine somewhere else. The ONLY difference between the two is one uses a RJ11 connector("normal phone" in case I get the terminology wrong) and the one I have problems with a RJ45 (for networks). A telephone is normally plugged in that RJ45 and works fine. Any suggestions or am I beating a dead horse?
I'm no expert, but it looks like the rj45 socket is part of a network, and has nothing to do with dial-up. It could be the type of phone that works on a network, and not a normal tone-dial phone. It's unfortunate, but normal phone plugs (yes, RJ11) do fit into these larger sockets.
You could try and connect to that network (see the guy at the top first) with a NIC (built-in or PCMCIA) and use internet connection sharing (ICS).
In some ways its actually fortunate they both fit. Lots of companies run everything on cat5 or 5e with rj45 jacks back to patch panels in the wiring closet - this makes your wiring much more versatile. Phones work just fine on cat5.
If the phone is digital a modem won't work in that jack without a special adapter.
