Hi there!
Have a problem - sharing dsl over winxp. On my laptop, everything works (DHCP is assigned and working).

When i plug out the LAN cable and plug in the DSL cable, the laptop doesn`t assign the correct DHCP (gateway and subnet are ok, and DNS are found too), but the IP maybe the problem, because Internet doesn`t work.

I already tried to remove the ethernet adapter and reinstall it, but it didn`t help, it does not assign the correct IP. maybe someone knows the answer?

with plugging out lan don't you disconnect your laptop from the dhcp server?
what is your gateway? a dsl-router or simply the 'standard-gateway'
does it work when you get dynamic ips assigned by your isp?

are you on crack? Sounds like your disconnecting from the network or from the DSL line at least. If your changing computers, reboot the DSL box, since it probably is a MAC address issue. You need to clarify a bit more, me thinks.

By the way , (symantics, I know) the laptop/computer doesn't assign an IP address via DHCP, a DHCP server does....

Sounds like your unplugging the laptop from one interface and plugging it in another, are you doing this without shutting down the power to the laptop? If so, (hard to tell from you post), then after plugging in the new connection, go to a command prompt and type ipconfig /renew this will renew the ip from the new DHCP server on the new connection.

Well, it goes like this - from DSL adapter to my PC (not laptop). My PC has 2 NICs. One for Internet and one for ethernet. I`m sharing internet on the 2nd NIC and on my PC there is a DHCP server which assigns the laptop or whatever is connected to the other NIC an local adress (192.168.x.x) and everything (internet and lan works).

My PC isn`t always on, so I change the cables - plug the DSL cable directly to my laptop. Everything worked fine, the ip was renewed and internet was running. But a few days ago, when I did the same (plugging from DSL to my laptop) it didn`t work. It assigned me an adress which is the one i should have assigned by my ISP (because they start with 80.232.x.x), but nothing worked. Now I`m at my University where i`m connecting through the LAN (my adress is 192.168.x.x) and everything works.

It just seems, that everything works, when I`m connecting through a proxy or local DHCP which assigns me local adresses, but when i plug a direct connection it doesn`t work.

A strange problem, but I didn`t have such a problem before.

P.S

Already tried to reset the DSL box and so on. Seems just like an windows xp error which i can`t get rid of with simple methods (like renewing IP and so on).

When I renew my IP, it says that there was a problem, contact your ISP, but an adress was assigned.

Basically:
1)You're wondering why the laptop doesn't get a properly assigned dynamic address when swapping the connection between the PC (w/ the two NIC's) and the laptop and the DSL router.
or
2) You wondering why the laptop isn't assigning a proper DHCP address when swapped in. Does the laptop have DHCP service running or
3) I am way off track here with both summaries?

Have you established another internet connection, not LAN but Broadband, and used this one when you're at home connected directly to the DSL Modem. Bby the way...

have you entered a DHCP-server's IP in your laptop? f.e. 192.168.1.1 of your PC? If so is it the same like the UNI-Lan-DHCP? Anyway bit of an IP-jungle, better give your lap a fixed IP and kick DHCP
KISS
keep it simple s...orry
