Subject: Problem Connecting 2 PC's via DLS and Hu |
Comment: I'm trying to connect 2 PCs. One is running Windows 2000 and the other is Windows 98. I need both to connect to the internet. I have CAT5 cable running from both PC's(Ethernet NICs) to the HUB and a CAT5 cable running from the DLS box to the uplink of the Hub. Now...How do I get my DSL internet to run on both PC's. Thanks!

Reply: (edit)try setting the "internet sharing" to on. there is a check box setting in your NIC card settings. or try this: this is one suggestion that has worked for me. but youll have to get another NIC card. frist put two NIC cards in one PC and connect the dsl to one of them then connect the second NIC card in the the hub. then connect the second computer to the hub. on the computer you have the two NIC cards you need to enable "Internet Sharing" on the NIC card that the dsl is going to(thats in the settings of the NIC card. if not that one try the other one.

Reply: (edit)Thanks for the e-mail. I put an additional NIC card in the Win2000 and have both the Win2000 and Win98 connected to the Hub. I then routed the other cable from the other NIC in my Win2000 to the DSL. However, I still cannot get the Win98 computer to pull up the internet. Do you have additional suggestions? Thanks!

Reply: (edit)First off, you need to get yourself a router instead of a hub. After you set up the router you can surf the web with both machines at the same time. The hub only acts as a splitter whereas the router will Will allow multiple PC's to share the DSL connection with seperate ip addresses.

Reply: (edit)Ok..I have a router and used it prior to getting the hub. The only reason I got the hub was because AOL didn't support Routers and said NONE of their services will work with Routers; but promised me that a hub would work. Is it possible to use both? And now that I have it hooked up as you suggested; I realize that there isn't anything going into the Uplink of the Hub. Should there be? Thanks again for your help!

Reply: (edit)One more thing...With the 2 NICs in my Win2000, I have 1 of them connected to Win2000 and the other is for the Hub. How will I get the sharing software to recognize the NIC that's in the Win98 pc since it is my Client? Do I need yet another NIC (totalling 3) in my Win2000? Thanks for clearing this up for me.
