I am on a network with a laser printer that has its own ip address, how can i print directly to this printer? If i go into a new network printer, its not listed in there because its not physically attachted to any pc, it plugs straight into the network. any ideas cheers jay

You need to create a new printer port.

Start/settings/printers/add printer/local printer/create a new port/select Standard TCP/IP port/ finish entering the info on the new printer wizard that pops up.

Uh...Sterling? What version of Win98 are you using? I have never seen a "Create New Port" option in Win98. To my knowledge, that's strictly a NT (and decendants) option.

Anyway, Jay, I downloaded and installed HP JetAdmin software from HP to use with my HP5N. I tried several times on a 98 box to configure and setup the printer to no avail. I tried it once on a NT box and it worked. I haven't before tried to print to a directly attached print device so I was mostly exploring and learning for myself. What I do know is that a print device must have a print server. That can be a computer with the appropriate software installed or a separate specific device such as HP's JetDirect 70X. Perhaps there is a way to print, using Win98 as the print server, to a directly attached print device, but I can not find any supporting documentation for that.

Without more info, I can only assume this is a corporate environment. In this case there would be a computer somewhere in the network that is operating as the print device's print server. You would then need to connect to the print server.

Hope this helps

JT

If you are connecting to an HP printer
that has a network card and an IP and all
set, then on the client machine you would
insert the HP CD and install the printer
and tell it it's a network printer.
HP will create an "HP JetDirect" port on
your PC and eventually, you'll be asked
for the IP or Name of the device you
want to print to and you can either let
it browse and select the printer yourself
or enter the IP numbers.

If you are running an HP printing device, it has been my experience that you will need to install the DLC protocol and from there create a new port.

I've set up exactly the same thing here at the office, and the Jet Direct software seems to work quite nicely, although I'm using it with an HP 170X print server.

If you install the jetamin software, there should be a place to manually enter the IP address of the printer. (does the printer use TCP/IP?) if not, then you MAY be able to use the jetamin and an ipx protocol with win 98. I did have a heck of a time trying to configure the 170x at first though.

I also believe that Epson has software that will allow you to create a tcp print port.

using either of these will give you a computer icon in the network neighbourhood, and they say something like EPSON printers (or in the case of jetadmin, MY NETWORK PRINTERS).

BTW...do you know what kind of printer it is, and does it accept TCP/IP, IPX, Netware, or what?
as far as using DLL/LC I dont know anyone who still uses it.
