Printer & file sharing setup for 5 computers

March 3, 2010 at 07:47:52
Specs: Windows Vista, AMD 955
Hi folks,

5 PCs:-
2 Windows Vista
2 Windows XP
1 Windows 7

What will be the simple setup for sharing a printer amongst them? Do I need a printer server to do the job?

It is an USB printer.

TIA

if you want access to the printer without a pc being on then you want a network print server.
otherwise just pick a pc, attach the printer and share it out.

Hi wanderer,

Thanks for your advice.

Whether you meant "ethernet printer"

The printer and the PC have to be on all time?

ethernet printer refers to a printer with a builtin network port. These are usually much more expensive then using a regular printer with a print server.

Google print server for more info.

"The printer and the PC have to be on all time?"

The pc is being the print server. If its not on, then you can't print. Answer to the question is yes.
