Print queue

Sharp / Mx3501n
October 1, 2009 at 07:23:02
Specs: Server 2003
At least four times a day i would have to stop
and restart the print queue services on our
Print Server because the queue would just
hang up and not print and jobs. What is the
possible cause of this?
the only thing i noticed is that the amount of
users printing to the printer has doubled. Can
this also be a cause?

What are you using for a print server?

What kind of printer is it (make/model)?

How is the printer connected (network, to a PC)?

So the issue appears to be the printer server on 2003. First, check Event Viewer to see if there are any errors relating to the print queue. If there are, make note of the number and error message and google it or search it on MS's website and see if you can find resolution there.

If there are no errors, you might want to install wireshark on the server and sniff packets. When things lock up....stop wireshark and inspect the packets to see if that can help you figure out what's going on.

I would also consider moving the print server to a different computer other than your 2003 server. If you have an old PC kicking around that's basically doing nothing, I'd set it up as the print server.
