In Windows NT4, the PDC is the Primary Domain Controller, the BDC is a Backup Domain Controller. All user accounts and password changes are created on the PDC and then replicated to the BDCs. You must have one and only one PDC in the domain but you can have one or several BDCs depending on your needs. BDCs will handle authentication requests so the PDC does not get overloaded.
The role of PDC and BDC can be changed between computers. In other words a BDC can be promoted to a PDC and their roles will reverse.
There are several other details that could be talked about if you had the time and felt like writting a book here but that should get you started.
