Hi, does anyone know what PPTP error 112 means? I'm getting the following when trying to connect with an SMC barricade router:
07 December 2004 15:39:36 DOD:triggered internally
07 December 2004 15:39:36 start to dial-up
07 December 2004 15:39:36 PPTP:PNS=10.0.0.138
07 December 2004 15:39:36 PPTP:error=-112
The router used to work, I just upgraded the firmware and reset to factory settings..now I'm just trying to recreate the connection

Are you trying to setup a VPN connection?
You need two ports open through to the host end in order to get a PPTP tunnel operational. Usually port 1723 carries the authentication and supervisory control traffic for the PPTP tunnel, and port 47, usually, carries the tunnel payload. If either of these two ports are blocked anywhere along the path, so that the client end can't access them, then the tunnel will fail to open up, and you'll get an error. You need to check for the correct ports on your router.

Hi,
thanks for your help.
What I'm trying to do is to setup an internet connection. From the internet connection setup by my ISP, I have to setup a VPN connection to 10.0.0.138. I've noticed that if I set this value or the 'My IP' value to something else the error changes to -102 so I think they are set correct.
What's not convincing me is whether i have to setup:
subnet to 255.255.255.0 (like my network) or 255.0.0.0 (as suggested by the ISP)
- I've tried both options but no effect
DHCP on or off
VPN Passthrough for PPTP and IPSec as on or off..I've tried both options but none worked

Do you not have the setup docs from your ISP about connecting through a tunnel? If your ISP is telling you that you need to use the mask 255.0.0.0 for the IP address 10.0.0.138 then that is the one you need to use. Are you using VPN software to make the tunnel or are you using something on the router? I've always used the software on my computer (like Cisco) and not the router to set up VPN. Remember your tunneling into there network and then back. You tunnel into their network using the IP address and subnet above then you will get back an IP address, subnet, DNS, WINS, for that adapter or (Local Area Connection). You shouldn't have to put any IP addresses on your nic card just the one for the VPN software. Now this might be different on a VPN router. Have you installed a software firewall or have you upgraded to SP2? Turn off all firewalls so you can diagnose the problem.
If this connection worked before then when you upgraded to the newest firmware and everything went back to the default settings then it's a config problem. The fastest and simplest way to fix this is call you’re ISP and ask them what needs to be set and what ports need to be open.

I called my ISP and my DSL provider (they're two separate companies) and they both informed me they do not support router connections. I've tried all the settings you've suggested but have got nothing in return. I am not using a firewall..the connection is via windows 2000.
What's left is to contact the company I bought the router from cause they set up everything. I wouldn't try contacting the SMC support cause they're rubbish
Thanks,

From your first post you said that your using XP. Your DSL is provided by your ISP. Why would you a have two seperate lines or do you? If they want help you going through a router then have them help you set up the VPN connection just using the broadband modem. If that works then transfer that over to the router or just plug up the router and see what happens. Maybe it's just a config problem on the software and not the router. Something to at least check. If it doesn't work when you have the router in place then I would bet that it's a port problem.

Hi,
well, just for the sake of it, in Malta we have to pay for our phone line, our DSL provider and our ISP, they're three separate companies Maltacom, Datastream and MaltaNet (in my case)..fortunately the ISP also takes the DSL bill and forwards it to them.. The good thing (for them) is that each time the internet slows down they blame each other ex. last month I had a problem with a slow connection and I had to jump from one company to another to get them to fix it..
That said, I finally solved the problem, silly me, I forgot (actually didn't know I had to) enter the primary and secondary DNS server for the connection, those who know how the SMC Barricade interface is will understand why..
basically, the wizard does not take you to any page where you enter these servers and the page where to enter them is listed in the same radio button group/form for the alternative network connection types (PPP, PPTP etc.) thus you first have to setup a DNS connection and then set up a PPTP connection which is awkward.
Thanks for your help all of you.
Norbert
