This computer is wirelessly connected through a linksys router. It uses DSL to connect to the internet. In the router settings it connects using the PPPOE method. No problems. Now I want it so I have to connect through a connection in Windows XP where I have to sign on myself. I set the router setting to obtain IP automatically. Then I connect in windows XP. I connect fine, but then after a few seconds or about two minutes, my computer completly locks up, and I have to turn it off by holding down the power button. How can I make it not do this?

You don't mention having a router. You don't mention running zonealarm which is a software firewall.

Sounds like you have a direct to the internet connection and your "lockups" are port trojans hacking your machine.

From a friends machine download zonealarm, adaware and spybot. Burn them to cd. Install them on your pc when you are NOT connected to the internet. Get on the internet once you have Zonealarm installed and configured.

Update everything, run the spyware checkers and get a updated Antivirus installed. These are basic protective armor you need when on the internet.

Where was my head? Course you mentioned a router.

You logon to XP. I don't quite get what signing on to xp has to do with setting the router to get ip dynamically [don't you mean the workstation?]

Almost sounds like you have some apps configured to automatically go out to the internet to do updates.

Come up in safe mode and see if you have the same lockup issue. If you disconnect the network cable from the xp box do you get the same lockups?
