I live in guatemala and every year I have to replace my DLink router because of power surges. It's not a regular power surge though. It doesn't come through the power lines since the router still works in wireless but from what I can understand it's the ports that are getting fried since I cannot access the router from anything connected with cat cable, it shows that there is a connection but I cannot access internet nor can I get the router config 192 etc. So this only happens when there is a lightning strike near by then the ports get fried. How is this happening? And is there any filter or anything I can do to make this stop.

I know it's not power since my modem and computer are both plugged in the same place and had no problems.

Some possibilities are:

Enclose the router in some type of non metallic box.

Ground the chassis of the router to the water pipe near the water meter.

&/or

Install a lightning on the house.
