Maybe it would be easier suggesting something if we knew which part of the world you are in, or want to work in.

Hi Michael,
Statistics show that chances of finding a job through the paper and job websites are low.

My suggestions:
1. Research associations/groups in your industry and attend their seminars/networking events. Mingle with people there. Many ass'ns also have volunteer positions within, or list job and volunteer positions of member organizations.

2. Write up a list of ALL the people you know: friends, friends of your parents, school mates and teachers, people from all aspects of your life. Contact them all and tell them you would like their help, you are looking for a job, and tell them the type of position you are looking for. Often, friends/family don't think we need their help until we specifically ask them. Be sure to ask everybody you speak with whether they know of anybody else you should call. Also, one friend of mine emailed her resume and a note about what type of job she was looking for to all her friends.

3. Make a list of the organizations that may interest you, and set up/conduct information interviews with somebody there. In information interviews you are simply asking the person questions about their company/industry for your own research, you are not asking for a job. If, after you have spoken with a number of companies, you "choose" a few you'd like to work at, you would then re-contact your info interview person and ask about how you'd go about applying with their company. And a key part of the info interview process, is asking for referrals to other company contacts at the end of it. I'm sure there is lots of info on the web about how to set up/conduct an information interview. The point here is to get out and have people meet you in person, and see where that leads.

4. If you are lacking in work experience, consider volunteering your services while you look for work. It's a great way to get real experience and also make contacts.

Lastly, if there is a job that interests you, research the company and customize your resume to that specific job/company. It's more work, but will increase your chance of getting an interview. That is another benefit of doing the info interview - the contact will have likely given you some insights into the type of person the company hires, and you can then include those focuses if you decide to pursue a job with them.

Best of luck, Michael! Karen
