Hello,

I have a Netgear 24 port router and 23 systems networked using p2p in a three story building. My question is if there is an easy way to find out which work station is connected to which node on the router in the basement. We have assigned IP's but they are pretty random and I would like to reconfigure the ip's according to where they are on the router (192.168.100.1 192.168.100.2 ect)
thanks for any input

There is no easy way to do this. The only way would be to go to each individual PC, unplug/plug its network cable while someone monitors the LED on the switch to see which one goes on and off.

I would recommend putting a patch panel in between your cabling and switch. You can then label the front of the patch panel as to which device that particular patch port runs to.

Only way is to have the router assign static IPs. Go around and write down the network jack numbers of each computer (they are numbered?). Then you can trace the connection back to the router if things are labeled as they should be (patch panel with jack numbers or cables labeled with jack numbers). Only 23 systems should not be that big of an issue. :)

WILL POST FOR FOOD.

Are you sure that's a router? Doesn't sound like it to me....sounds like a switch. Yes, this could make a difference because if it's a managed switch you may be able to telnet into the management interface and check, at the very least, the MAC address of the unit assigned to each port. Then it's a simple matter of opening a command prompt on each PC and typing: ipconfig /all to get the MAC address and cross reference.

Just a quick tip....you may want to document this (ie: port # - PC Hostame) for future reference. There's nothing like good documentation to save you time.

Go to each machine and note the name and mac address.
Go to the router and associated the mac address with a ip address. This way that machine will only get that ip address.

Golly gee wilerkers everyone. Learn to Internet Search
