I am trying to host a web server, port the default web port (80) won't work for some reason. When I try ports like 10000, the server loads in fine. This wouldnt be a problem except, the site I want to register a domain for my IP, only redirects to the default port 80. Any ideas on how to get port 80 to work? thanks.

when you are trying non-standard ports, you are pointing the browser to your external ip:portnum from outside your network, then doing PAT on your router to 80 on your server?
is that correct?

umm, sorry, i dont know what PAT is and yes, I am doing ip:10000 and that works. But on port 80, it should just be http://ip but it doesnt work.
My ISP is verizon

PAT is Port Address Translation. What he's saying is if the connection comes in on port 10000 then you must be translating (mapping on the router) that port to port 80 on your web server.
To me, it just sounds like a firewall (yours or your ISP's) is blocking data coming to port 80 when the request for that data did not originate from the web server itself. In other words, it sees it as an intruder, and thus stopping it. If you're running XP, make sure the XP firewall is allowing Port 80 through.

I'm pretty sure that Verizon does block port 80. You should check with them to confirm this, but if it's true you will never be able to run a server on port 80.

Blargh, Verizon isnt even crazy about me playing around with the router config so I can host other things, so I wouldn't be surprised if they blocked it. As for the firewall, I will check.

I would call and ask them... it would save the time and headache....
they have absolutely no say in what you do to your router, as long as you dont violate your customer service agreement... In which case they will likely ask you to stop before they interrupt service. In other words you can get away with a lot more than people think, i.e. web server, email server, remote access, whatever. as long as you're not spamming or hosting kiddy porn you'll be all good.

check this out. i have verizon and i can host anything i want. i have a webserver, a couple games servers that i used to run, a ventrilo talk server and they all work perfectly fine (the webserver is currently still running).
i live in washington so i dont know if that will change any agreement of policy with verizon, but im guessing its the router because one of my friends also has verizon and hosts stuff (pretty much all the same things as me).
