Hi i have linksys WA54G router , i recently knew the port range for fifa 2008 which is 3658 but what i dont know is what to type in application ( what is its name) and what ip address i give it .
And is there a way to avoid port forwarding toe very game you play. i heard something called dmz does that. anyways i made my dmz ip 192.168.1.64 does that mean i dont need to port forward anything anymore?
does that mean if any new game i install it will automatically be forwarded? even though i didnt type its port range.
please help me im really confused about all of this i need step by step instructions, the games i would like to play are Fifa 2008, age of empires 2, little fighter 2

With regard to fifa (and keep in mind, I'm not at all familiar with it) you would forward the port to the PC running it. So if the PC running fifa on your LAN has the IP: 192.168.0.21, you would create a port forward sending port 3658 to that IP address.
With regard to other games. You would create a new port for each game since the games all tend to use separate ports. Unless the PC running the games is sitting in the DMZ (not a very safe thing to do with that PC since it means it's out in the general public without protection) creating a DMZ won't be of any value. You're likely better off to go with port forwards.
As far as which ports to forward, a quick google search of each game should get you their ports (example: age of empires 2 port number). Once you have the port numbers, you create a forward to the IP of the PC that you will be playing the game on.
It's worth noting you only need to create port forwards if you're going to host the game(s) and have someone connect to you. If you're not planning on doing that, you don't require a port forward.
As for step-by-step instructions, read the manual for your router for those as they will differ from brand/model to brand/model.

Hi Curt,
Does the name of the app need to match the executable? In my case it's a p2p and the exe is:
DCPlusPlus.exe
TIA

If at first you don't succeed, you're about average.M2

The name of the app is usually just so you can identify it and doesn't have to be anything particular (i.e. you can call it fifa08 or whatever you want).
Most routers and sofware now also support 'uPNP' which basically allows the software to automatically create port forwarding for you as long as the service is enabled on your router. You may want to try that if you're not too familiar with port forwarding.Wizard ICT. Microsoft Certified System Engineer.
