I'm trying to set up port forwarding on my adsl modem/router and I don't really know what I'm doing. The special applications section has a trigger port, trigger type (either udp or tcp), public port, and public type.

I'm trying to set it up for azureus. I've set my port number for azureus to 50001. Is this the public port or private port? Azureus also only has one port setting, does this mean I set it up the same for both sections? Lastly, do I need to set it up for both ud and tcp. Azureus is supposed to do both. Thanks for any replies I may receive.

50001 is both the public port and the trigger port. As implied by the name, port forwarding forwards traffic on a designated port from one device - your router - to another device - your computer.

Regarding TCP vs. UDP, that depends on what azureus requires. Try reading the documentation. Or just experiment - if one doesn't work, try the other.

If you look at the help section in Azureus you will find links to very specific instructions for setting up port forwarding. It is very possible they have your specific router/modem listed.

If not try the mfrs. site, or Google for port forwarding and your model.
