point NT4 PDC to 2003 box for dns

March 12, 2009 at 08:34:12
Specs: NT4 SP6, 2003 Server SP1
Currently the NT4 PDC has no internal DNS setup. Can I install the DNS role on another 2003 server and point the NT4 server to it to use DNS? Also, will the client workstations' DNS information update to the new DNS server?

You might want to clarify how you are setup presently in your lan for dns.
You certainly can point NT to your internal dns server if you have one.

currently the NT4 PDC and BDC are pointing to the ISP for dns. The other 2003 server is not being used for anything but storage and we want to control DNS. Rather than mess with the NT4 dinosaur, I just want to point the NT4 PDC's dns to the 2003 server's ip address.

Will this also update all the xp workstations' DNS which are connected to the NT4 domain? They are setup to "get dns automatically"

workstations dns entries will only change if you make that change in the dhcp server workstation properties.

you would need to engage dns server on 2003 and add the host/ptr entries for the nt servers.

This ms dns is only for lan name resolution. If you also want internet resolution you will need to put your isp's dns servers in the forwarders tab of dns server.

great, I am with you now! Any reason I shouldn't set to allow secure and unsecured dynamic updates on the 2003 box?

So I dont have to change the static dns on the PDC and BDC, just the DHCP Scope options?
