Hey everyone. I know this is a rehashed topic online, but I have hunted all over and have tried everything precribed and am still havin issues. So I just recently reinstalled Windows XP Pro and all my drivers, and yet while everything else seems up to snuff, I can't seem to connect to the wireless network at my house.
IF I have my TCP/IP set to auto for both ip and dns, I get the 'work offline' window. My ipconfig /release /renew tells me that I am unable to contact my dhcp server. If I try to repair the wireless connection, I get the 'Cannot renew your ip address' message. Joy.
Right. So then I try to use a static address with all the appropriate info from the router, and all of a sudden my wireless indicator says I am connected to the network, with good Sigstrength, etc., yet I still cannot get into a browser, or even access the router (despite everything being ok according to windows??). If I try to repair this new (non working) static connection in XP, it all goes through as though there is nothing wrong, establishes the connection properly and registers with the DNS and so forth. If I ipconfig with the static IP and DNS, I don't get and DNS suffix listings, and my IP Routing and WINS proxy are both listed 'no', but everything else lists as per usual. Perhaps a dns problem? Also might help to know that this connection peirodically will disconnect on its own, but repairing it again brings it back to the supposedly functional (lies) level.
I have checked the reg and restarted windows zero and dhcp cmds - both are on, both are automatic, both have ben set to restart on 1st, 2nd fail.
I have reinstalled and updated my wireless drivers.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled TCP/IP stacks.
I always have my f-walls disabled (incl zonealarm) and have no new software installed that would otherwise impede the connection.
I have run winsockfix files.
I have repaired the connection many times both in add/remove programs AND in the wireless connections list.
I have sacrificed a baby lamb to the Gods of all things digital. The only thing I see that might be a problem is that I have an infrared port (SMSC IrCC) that is having driver (I keep installing them but nothing seems to fix it) problems. As far as I know though, this oughtn't hurt my i-net connection, but I don't know everything.
Perhaps it's XP itself, and I should do some sort of recovery, I dunno. It seems that when I use a static IP I am tricking XP into thinking I am fully connected, but still am not at all able to access the net (or the router, for that matter). When it's after a dhcp and in auto, nothing seems to work.
pinged 127.0.0.1, successful replies, 0 lost
ping on local ip all successful
ping timed out on default gateway
ping timed out on dns ip
ping timed out on remote hostThanks in advance for any suggestions as to how to get this puppy back up and running. It's a Toshiba M40 Satellite SF-300E w/ integrated intel wireless, if that helps @ all. Cheers,
bartacus

You mentioned zonealarm but what about windows firewall? Disable it to test the connection. Delete any symantec and norton products.
