Pings OK But No Network Neighborhood

I have a P-166 running Win98se which I use as a host machine. I connect it to my P-800/WinXP with two 3COM 3C905B-TX NICs and a crossover cable. My problem is that neither machine shows up in each other's Network Neighborhood. A search for the other machine turns up nothing. I can ping each machine from the other and get a response. No problems there. Workgroup names are the same. Local IP and subnet numbers are correct. ICS works and I can connect to the host with WinVNC. File sharing is on in both machines. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the NIC. I even reinstalled Win98. I've used this setup for about a year with no problems. The weirdness began when I got a little bored, and decided to put WinNT on the host computer. I won't go in to that disaster. I'll save it for another forum question or 10. Anyway, when I abandoned NT and put Win98 back on the host, this problem appeared. Maybe I changed something in XP. I don't know. I searched this forum but could not find any answers that solved my problem. Any ideas? Or is there anything else you would like to know?

Thanks for your help,

Gary

I forgot to mention that when I connect to the host with WinVNC, I have to use the local IP address (192.168.0.1). If I use the computer name, it says "Failed to get server address". It used to work with the computer name. Thought this might be useful info.

Install Netbui protocol (Microsoft's network browsing protocol), and things should show up in Network Neighborhood.

If you want to connect via hostname, edit the hosts file to include the IP address and hostname of the computers.
